Prof. Dr. Kevin Ostoyich (Valparaiso University)

Prof. Dr. Kevin Ostoyich ist im Wintersemester 2023/24 Fellow am Institut für Bayerische Geschichte.

 

Kevin Ostoyich is professor of history at Valparaiso University, where he served as chair of the Department of History from 2015 to 2019. He holds his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is currently a board member of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, a board member of the Sino-Judaic Institute, an advisory board member of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, a non-resident fellow of the American-German Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and an associate fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg (global dis:connect) at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. He has served previously as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München; a senior fellow at the German Historical Institute Pacific Regional Office/University of California, Berkeley; and a visiting professor for Shanghai University.

At Valparaiso University he was bestowed the Excellence in Teaching Award for 2017-2018. Ostoyich is the co-editor of The History of the Shanghai Jews: New Pathways of Research (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) and author of The German Society of Pennsylvania: A Guide to Its Book and Manuscript Collections (German Historical Institute, 2006). He interviews Holocaust survivors, creates historical theatre plays about Shanghai Jewish refugees with students, and lectures on the Holocaust around the world.

While serving as a guest professor at the Institut für Bayerische Geschichte, Ostoyich is working on a variety of projects, including the documentary film Gary’s Letter, the play Three Girls of Shanghai, and the museum exhibition “Sewing and Survival: Textile Histories of the Shanghai Jews” (for the Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum Augsburg). He is currently researching the history of a group of Shanghai refugees who were sent to Bavaria in 1950. The refugees were housed in the displaced persons camps of Wildflecken and Föhrenwald and a hospital in Augsburg. During his time at the Institut, Ostoyich’s play The Singer of Shanghai and his podcast Tiny Dancer: Retracing the Steps of Jackie Beer will be published by the Käte Hamburger Kolleg (global dis:connect) at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
